The fashion industry is like a living,
breathing entity; always changing and adapting to the environment, and in 2013,
a few very strange clothing styles the shelves on the high street.
One of the joys of the alternative fashion
scene is that level of creativity that goes into the designs. Alternative
designers are always striving to create something completely new that doesn’t
conform to standard mainstream conventions. In 2013, the three main styles that
received a significantly level of attention were: steampunk, rockabilly and
zombie. Although none of these styles are particularly new, it’s the way
they’ve adapted other genres that makes them completely unique.
Steampunk
The steampunk scene has been quietly evolving
over the past ten years. Since the last generation of consoles, many fans of
gaming have been exposed to steampunk stories. This paved the way for a fashion
style which combines both Edwardian and Victorian attire with modern technology
– and it works surprisingly well!

The steampunk scene is evolving at a very
fast rate, and nowadays virtually every city across the globe has a solid fanbase
who take part in regular conventions and meetups. While the steampunk scene
isn’t yet mainstream, the popularity is increasing at such a fast rate that by
the summer of 2014, virtually everyone will be aware of it.
Rockabilly
Rockabilly
fashion is an odd mixture of retro style, goth and punk. Rockabilly
clothing is usually modelled on 50’s and 60’s attire and icons such as John Travolta,
Elvis Presley and Betty Page. Rockabilly is a lifestyle used to celebrate all
things old and the beauty of the golden age.

Common characteristics include sailor
themed jewellery and tattoos, leather jackets, pompadour haircuts and polka dot
dresses. In 2013, the rockabilly scene evolved tremendously and nowadays it’s
not uncommon to see a pinup queen walking the streets in full 60’s attire.
Zombie
Fascination in the zombie scene has been
building up for many years. Set in motion by the Resident Evil series and a
string of low budget b-movies, zombie survivalists are everywhere. Zombie
fashion isn’t about dressing and acting undead, but more about paying homage to
classic characters that made the genre what it is today. Cosplay is very common
within zombie circles and is becoming ever more popular among the
mainstream.

The alternative world is always spawning
ideas and fashion styles which are quite simply unheard of. The fashion scenes
of 2013 just show how creative and diverse the industry can be, and will no
doubt pave the way for various other styles in the future.
